GasRadar Daily Briefing — Tuesday, October 13, 2026
Market Overview
TTF closed at EUR 84.35/MWh, +3.58% — a fifth consecutive higher close and a fresh four-week high. The session was volatile: an intraday dip to EUR 77.14 was aggressively bought, with the market closing near the day's high of EUR 84.74. That price action matters — dip-buying of that magnitude signals genuine conviction behind the rally, not just thin-market drift.
The move extends a +14.7% run from the October 5 low of EUR 73.51. TTF has now cleared the EUR 82 zone that rejected the September 21–27 rally, leaving the market with little technical resistance until the mid-September highs. Momentum is unambiguously bullish, and the driver is fundamental, not speculative: storage.
Storage Update
EU aggregate storage sits at 73.75% full — a 16.2pp deficit to the 5-year average of 90.0%. This is the core bullish anchor of the entire market. At a marginal injection trend of just +0.14%/day, the EU is not refilling fast enough to close a gap of this size before withdrawal season begins.
The distribution is as concerning as the headline:
- Germany at 60.0% and Netherlands at 62.0% — the two largest Northwest European demand centres are the weakest major markets. Germany's trend of +0.2%/day is barely moving the needle.
- Latvia (49.6%) and Slovakia (55.9%) are critically low, with Latvia showing zero net injection.
- Poland (99.2%), Portugal (95.5%) and Italy (88.9%) are comfortable, but southern and eastern buffers cannot compensate for Northwest European shortfalls — pipeline topology limits how much relief can flow west.
The "so what?": with storage this far below normal entering winter, the market has no cushion to absorb a cold snap or a supply disruption. That is precisely why prices are repricing higher.
Weather & Demand
EU weighted HDD today: 8.1 — heating demand is building but not yet at winter intensity. The coldest readings are Nordic and Central European: Helsinki -1.7°C, Stockholm 1.5°C, Munich 4.5°C, Copenhagen 4.7°C, Warsaw 5.6°C.
The signal is supportive rather than explosive. Early-season cold in Scandinavia and Germany pulls marginal gas into heating, slowing injections at exactly the moment storage needs to be building. Every cold day now is a day of lost refill capacity — and with the EU already 16pp behind normal, the market is treating each one as a tightening event.
Winter Stress Monitor
The GasRadar Winter Stress Monitor projects a median end-of-season storage level of 26.8% on April 1, 2027, with a 63% probability of finishing below the 30% threshold. The 30-day median projection is 73.0% by November 10 — essentially flat from today's 73.8%, implying injections are effectively stalling as heating demand takes over. This is a projection of physical storage, not a price forecast, but it quantifies the tightness the market is pricing: a sub-30% end-of-season outcome would leave the EU dangerously exposed heading into refill season 2027.
Supply & Geopolitics
- Nord Stream explosions trial opens in Germany this week — revived media attention on the 2022 sabotage. No immediate supply impact, but it keeps European supply-security risk in the headlines and reinforces the risk premium.
- Global coal demand rising as LNG shortage deepens (OilPrice) — a direct read-across: tightening LNG availability pushes utilities toward coal and leaves Europe competing harder for marginal cargoes. Bullish for TTF.
- Shell calls Australia's gas reserve plan a "sledgehammer" risking market failure — potential long-term headwind to Australian LNG export flexibility, a market Europe depends on for winter cargoes.
- Russia signals diesel exports may exceed Trump-announced volumes — oil complex softening, but this is a products story with limited direct TTF transmission.
- IMF warns war and debt threaten global growth — demand-side risk, but too macro to move gas today.
Net: the news flow leans supportive, with the LNG shortage narrative the most tradeable item.
Bottom Line
Bullish — a 16.2pp storage deficit, stalling injections and a 63% probability of ending winter below 30% keep TTF bid; the key risk is a sudden mild-weather turn or a demand-destruction headline capping the rally.
